BC On Board with Secondary Suites

The permitting changes

The province of BC is introducing housing legislation that permits secondary suites or carriage (laneway) homes in all communities across BC.

This new ruling in place rectifies zoning issues to accelerate the housing development process, and will require municipalities throughout B.C. to expedite and streamline permitting by updating community plans and zoning bylaws on a regular basis, ensuring that they have enough housing to meet the needs of both their current and future residents.

The funding opportunity

The BC government is coupling the streamlined permitting process with a secondary suite incentive program, which offers up to $40,000 in funding.

This forgivable loan is up to 50% of the cost of the renovation or build of a secondary suite. This initiative is in place to encourage more affordable housing options in the province, and is available to homeowners who are interested in building or renovating.

To be eligible, home owners must apply and be willing to follow the rules of the program. Applications for this program will be accepted starting in April 2024. Additional information on this initiative can be found here: Secondary Suite Incentive program
